Direct Melt Composite Rivet Contacts
Very economical, for many applications, is the direct melt composite rivet contact. Basic economy is achieved through using precious metals only for the contact facing. This type of contact is made by melting a carefully controlled amount of precious metal face material directly to the nickel-plated rivet eliminating any intermediate bonding material. Nickel-plated steel is most often used as the backing material. As there is no brazing material between the silver and nickel-plate, these contacts perform dependably at high operating temperatures. For a strong, permanent joint, the steel shank is spun or staked to the current carrying arm. Nickel plating reduces any possibility of rust formation. Natural melt radius face is somewhat rougher than a brazed or brazed and coined counterpart. Dimensional accuracy and finish appearance of the natural melt can be improved by coining to the radius desired.
