Tool Design Engineer - Bloomfleld, CT
The Tool Design Engineer is charged with conceiving, developing, designing and implementing tooling and procedures, in a team environment, for the cost efficient manufacture of custom and proprietary products.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conceives, plans, and executes design of various types of tooling including plastic injection molds, stamping dies, jigs & fixtures, forming tools, material transfer tools according to customer tolerances and performance expectations
- Remains abreast of continuously evolving developments and best practices in a wide variety of technical disciplines including, but not limited to, manufacturing processes and techniques, CAD/CAM, machine tools and methods, materials.
- Relies on extensive field experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals within given timeframe.
- Provides on-going engineering assistance in tooling manufacture, optimization, and commissioning.
- Analyzes products for manufacturing feasibility, and makes improvement recommendations to shorten delivery time, cut costs and improve quality.
- Specifies purchased tooling components and follows through for timely and accurate delivery (mold frames, die sets, other mold/die/tooling components).
- Collaborates in a team environment with project engineers, product designers, process engineers, sales personnel, production personnel, toolmakers, CNC programmers and various vendors to optimize tool design per suggestions of above team members.
- Publishes and disseminates models and drawings to management, sales, customers, programmers, toolmakers, and other users.
- Maintains all model and drawing files at current revision levels.
- Follows established standards and procedures including modeling techniques, file storage procedures and training in accordance with ISO procedures.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the properties and strengths of tool steels, machining processes and inspection methods.
- Knowledge of engineering polymers, injection molding process/machinery (particularly precision insert molding) and stamping/forming process/machinery.
- Ability to visualize complex 3-dimensional geometry and motion.
- Must possess creative/innovative mechanical aptitude.
- Strong communications, both oral and written, and interpersonal skills required.
- Must be able and willing to work in a team.
- Strong CAD/computer skills (Pro/E, PDMLink, Autocad, Plastics Adviser, MS Windows, MS Office, Internet)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Engineering degree or equivalent, demonstrated tooling design experience.
- Four or more years Pro/E ,Auto Cad or similar 3D CAD experience.
