(Senior) Research Chemist

The (Senior) Research Chemist provides technical expertise in areas of materials analysis and processing at Deringer-Ney.  He/she will: initiate and conduct research on the behavior and analysis of materials; work directly with internal and external stakeholders to resolve technical problems; and supervise the Analytical Services laboratory which certifies chemical and mechanical properties of DNI materials and components.
 
 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Become a technical expert and thought leader at Deringer-Ney.
    • Serve as the Company's chemistry subject matter expert 
    • Form relationships with customer, industry, and academic experts in relevant areas
    • Maintain current expertise in emerging markets and technologies of interest to Deringer-Ney, and make upper management aware of important innovations
  • Provide research and experimentation to support the Company and its customers (~50% time)
    • Initiate and perform research in the areas of electrochemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and/or surface science to enhance Deringer-Ney’s expertise and capabilities
    • Provide support to resolve day-to-day manufacturing problems related to chemistry, with particular emphasis on cleaning, pickling, and electrochemical processing
    • Track and report on the status of developmental and support projects
    • Work directly with current and prospective customers to select appropriate Deringer-Ney technologies and products, or develop novel solutions if needed
    • Benchmark competitive products and technologies, and identify opportunities for operational improvement.  This includes performing critical analysis of the economic value of new technologies and equipment
  • Manage and improve the Analytical Services laboratory, which analyzes and certifies DNI materials and components (~50% time)
    • Manage technicians responsible for mechanical testing, chemical testing, and administration 
    • Develop and validate analytical chemistry techniques and standards in order to accurately certify chemical test data
    • Ensure safe operation of the Analytical Services laboratory, that all Deringer-Ney policies are followed, and that priorities are observed through the lab.  Work with the Deringer-Ney Quality Control team to comply with all ISO and other quality directives
    • Develop, maintain, and periodically analyze performance metrics associated with the number and type of analysis done by the Analytical Services laboratory and stability of its processes. Provide written monthly summary of laboratory activities to supervisor
    • Insure that equipment is properly maintained and that all tests are done in a timely manner

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide high quality, high impact technical communications
    • Prepare well written, professional reports, whitepapers, and publication-quality manuscripts
    • Document new test methods to support improved product quality / reliability
    • Produce detailed chemical, mechanical, or other research analyses for the Company, current, and prospective customers
  • Be proficient in the operation of all lab equipment.  Fill in for or assist all Analytical Services laboratory technicians as needed
  • Provide technical support and training to the Sales and Marketing departments, as needed
  • When necessary, assist administrative technician in maintaining an adequate amount of consumable lab supplies, spare parts, and PPE to prevent disruptions to the production and shipment of product

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must have a strong applied and theoretical understanding of inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and/or electrochemistry with applications to metals and alloys.
  • Intimate experience with operation and maintenance of analytical chemistry equipment.  X-ray fluorescence (XRF), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential thermal analysis (DTA) are skills relevant to the position
  • Experience with patent application and prosecution preferred
  • Experience managing small groups (1-3 people) preferred

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Degree in Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Experience in the operation of similar materials testing laboratory equipment is required, although not necessarily in a production support environment
  • Preferred education and experience levels as follows for Senior Research Chemist are:
    • BS + 12 years industrial research experience;
    • MS + 5 years industrial research experience; or
    • PhD
  • Preferred education and experience levels as follows for Research Chemist are:
    • BS + 5 years industrial research experience; or
    • MS
  • Demonstrated record of professional society involvement and/or academic productivity
